Celebrity drug rehab: Celebrities the judge sentenced to rehab

Posted by mandyf on September 22, 2011

Given how many celebrities have drug and alcohol problems that lead to legal problems, it is an ever growing trend to wake up in the morning and hear of another celebrity being sentenced to rehab. This is hardly the domain of the B-list stars as celebrities at their peak get the same treatment. Award winning celebrities get sentenced to rehab – no one is immune to this anymore. With that said, just what celebrities have been sentenced to rehab, and for what reason?

LA County Sheriff's Dept.

Not Feeling Lohantastic!

Lindsay Lohan is a frequent flier in the sentenced to rehab program – and one day some judge may get the idea that rehab just isn’t working for her and send her straight to jail without passing go and collecting $200. In January of 2007 Lohan was sentenced to rehab for 30 days, but couldn’t remain clean for 60 days after exiting. This was when Lohan was dismissed from Disney press tours for “Un-Disney-like behavior.” In May of 2007 she was again sentenced to rehab – this time for 45 days. Two weeks after discharge she was cited for felony possession of cocaine and a DUI.

That led to her checking in to rehab yet again in August of 2007 for 6 weeks. She completed the rehab program as a part of a plea deal, but didn’t bother going to her aftercare program which made her three year probation turn into 4 years with the snap of a finger. Fast forward to 2010 when Lohan missed a court appearance because she claimed to have lost her passport while in France. She avoided a bench warrant arrest upon arrival by her lawyers pre-emptively paying her bail. She was sentenced to 90 days in jail anyway  and on July 20, 2010 began another 3 month stint of court ordered rehab.

If you remember the 70’s you remember teen heart throb Leif Garret – the singer not the Viking. Garret has spent years in and out of rehab allegedly although he has always tried to keep it quiet. Usually that is no problem because he has been nothing more than a blurb in the “where are they now files” for 30 years. Garret was arrested and sentenced to 90 days of rehab in early 2010 when he tried to buy heroin from an undercover narcotics officer. He did not complete the program and was then sent to jail for 90 days with three years of probation. In a twist of reality – or reality TV – Garret needs a new rehab program and Dr. Drew’s VH1 show “Celebrity Rehab” is willing to settle for a sort of celebrity setting the stage for garret to appear on the next season of the show.

Stephanie Pratt of “The Hills” was arrested after leaving Heidi Montag’s birthday party in 2009 receiving a slap on the wrist charge for exhibition of speed rather than a DUI. The kicker was that she would have to attend a 3 month long alcohol education program and then attend 3 AA meetings per week for 8 weeks.

Tom Sizemore has a long history of substance abuse. Going back to 2003, Sizemore was placed on probation for beating his then girlfriend Heidi Fleiss the “Hollywood Madam.” he received 3 years of probation and was required to attend drug education classes and stay of drugs – particularly meth. He was then caught falsifying his urine tests and got 3 more years of probation. In 2007, he was arrested for possession of meth and given 16 months in jail for that and parole violation, but was released 8 months early to go to rehab. He had been to rehab many times on his own, none of the attempts ever working, but this was technically his first mandated rehab stint.

In 2009 he was arrested again and got out of going to jail by going on – wait for it … wait for it…. – Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab show. He then went on to …. Dr. Drew’s Sober House program. While Sizemore has not been arrested those shows it is unknown if he is actually sober or not.

Andy Dick being Andy Dick

The joke goes that when Andy Dick shows up at a party – the party is over. Dick was first arrested for a DUI in 2001 which turned up pot, and cocaine in his vehicle. He agreed to go to two years of rehab programs to stay out of jail. In 2004 he was arrested for possession of marijuana at a music festival., and a few more incidents followed on the heels of that. Dick continually was given the opportunity to go to rehab rather than jail. In 2009 he became another Dr. Drew Celebrity Rehab client, but for Dick sobriety still hasn’t taken. He has not been arrested again, but according those who know Dick he is certainly not sober.

Charlie Sheen took the rehab over jail option in 1999 when he was arrested for a DUI – that was just a year after overdose mind you. Sheen was considered clean most of the time the next ten years – or at least not as bad as he had been when younger. In 2009 he was arrested on domestic assault charges, and entered rehab again. The press is that he went voluntarily as a “preventative measure” , but there remains speculation it was ordered and kept sealed by the court.

Nicole Richie was sentenced to rehab in 2003 after being picked up for possession oh heroin. Then she repeated it again in 2006 after a DUI involving marijuana and Vicodin which sounds yummy but isn’t a great idea before driving on the highway. In 2010, she began missing her court ordered anti-drunk driving-education program classes, and had her probation extended one more year as well as an order to restart the classes.

Rush Limbaugh dodged a bullet after being arrested on charges of doctor-shopping for the painkillers hydrocodone and oxycodone. He was released after agreeing to pay $30,000 to help offset the cost of the investigation and going through 18 months of therapy.

Haley Joel Osmet had the luck of his on-screen father Forrest Gump when it comes to not being one of the dead people he saw in the “Sixth Sense.” In 2006, Osmet was nabbed for a DUI and marijuana possession after having a one car accident. He was ordered 60 hours of an alcohol education program, 3 years probation, a $1,500 fine, and mandatory attendance to at least 26 AA meeting in 6 months. As they say, keep coming back, it works if you work it – at least it reportedly has for Osmet who has had no further incidents!

Courtney Love…Sweet messed up Courtney Love…In 2005 with three separate cases staring her down, love cut a deal to do 18 months in rehab as her get out of jail free card. By that point being the widow of Kurt Cobain wasn’t impressing judges anymore. She violated her probation and was sentenced to 28 days in rehab for that. She violated that order and was then sentenced to 6 months in rehab which she did actually complete. As of 2010, Love is actually believed to be sober – for now at least.

Other stars who have been ordered to rehab include:

* Winona Ryder
* Robert Downey Jr.
* Darryl Strawberry
* Kelsey Grammer
* David Crosby
